Meet Lawrence Jenkins

Lawrence is an incarcerated farmer, teacher, writer, artist, community organizer and eco/social justice activist. He is serving a 28-year prison sentence in Washington state and is currently preparing to embark on his freedom journey for post-conviction relief and/or clemency.

Lawrence is most passionate about growing powerful communities by helping people reconnect with land through community farming and collective healing with nature. Lawrence is able to share the knowledge, wisdom and understanding gained from his own lived experience to help liberate others—mind, body and soul.

Amongst other things, Lawrence is a creative writer, poet and visual artist. Rooted in cultural influences and themes of Black Autonomy & Survival, his work is mainly centered around his lived experiences with trauma, loss, love, healing and struggle.

About Lawrence’s Sentence

Lawrence is currently incarcerated at Stafford Creek Correctional Center serving a natural life sentence for crimes in which nobody was physically injured. He has already served half of his sentence, and his imprisonment no longer serves the interest of justice.

Lawrence’s Freedom Dream & Vision for Re-Entry

Lawrence's re-entry plan is to live on a small plot of land where he can continue sharing his gifts with community and younger generations. Lawrence has spent his entire incarceration—nearly 20 years—studying, observing, participating, experimenting and creating different processes, programs and plans for the future. Some of these plans have already impacted communities around the country and Lawrence looks forward to growing his impact even more from outside the confines of prison when he is free.

“My plan is to invest in a brand new trailer home and secure a living space on a community farm where I could center autonomy, healing, creativity, and liberation education. I envision a space where I could just be. A space where I could actually think and create outside of the influences of capitalism and oppression, a space where I can practice communal love and solidarity in the most radical ways. I plan on shaping a space that can hold freedom, truly. This will be the foundation…”
